End-to-end sauna design & delivery

We offer a complete end-to-end service.

All of our outdoor saunas are handbuilt in our workshop in Devon, UK. This allows us to prefabricate your sauna to ensure the highest possible level of finish and to make installation and delivery more straightforward.

Each one is individually crafted and made to order — no two Out of the Valley saunas are the same. We offer optional extras and further customisation for all our main models, or a complete bespoke sauna design service.

Here's an overview of the process to produce your outdoor sauna.

1. Choosing the right sauna

Our core sauna range is designed to accommodate various group sizes and suit a wide range of locations. These models serve as a foundation, offering flexibility with optional extras and customisations to meet specific needs. Additionally, we provide a bespoke design service for those who require a more tailored solution. If you don't find exactly what you're looking for, get in touch, and we'll collaborate with you on a project-specific design.

2. Customising your sauna

We enjoy making each of our saunas unique in some way, and offer you the opportunity to make your sauna truly your own. After years of enjoying saunas, we know what adds to the experience, and so we offer a wealth of optional extras and further customisation on all of our models.

3. Handmade in our workshop

Once you’ve approved the specification and quote, your sauna is handbuilt and finished with care by our team of skilled craftspeople at the Out of the Valley workshop in Devon. As well as making installation more straightforward, prefabricating our saunas enables us to ensure the highest possible level of finish.

4. Delivery & installation of your sauna

When your sauna is ready and passed our workshop checks, we’ll transport it to your chosen site. We have become well practised in the most challenging of install locations. If necessary we’ll arrange a site visit and check access and also that the necessary groundworks and services are in place to receive it. From here, our team will install it with specialist equipment, and that’s it – your new sauna is ready for you to enjoy.

Wooden outdoor saunas

With a deep respect for wood, we carefully select each material for its unique properties and benefits.

Immersing yourself in the warmth of a wooden sauna provides mind and body benefits through a soothing heat ritual.

Larch

Mature larch trees can grow up to 30 metres tall and live for around 250 years. Its relatively fast growth makes it an excellent, sustainable alternative to slower-growing hardwoods, which can take decades or even centuries to reach maturity. Though technically a softwood, larch is prized for its remarkable strength-to-weight ratio and high resin content, giving it durability comparable to many hardwoods.

How we use larch

For the external cladding of our saunas, we often select larch, a strong and durable wood renowned for its ability to endure harsh outdoor conditions. To further enhance its resilience, we often use the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban. This method involves carefully charring the surface of the wood, forming a natural protective layer that guards against moisture, insects, and decay. In addition to its protective qualities, the charring process transforms the wood with a striking blackened finish.

Douglas fir

Douglas fir, native to North America, was introduced to the UK in 1827 by botanist David Douglas. On the west coast of North America, it can live for up to 1,500 years and reach heights of 85 metres. Renowned for its exceptional strength, Douglas fir boasts the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any wood species, coupled with remarkable durability.

How we use Douglas fir

Douglas fir forms important structural details in our saunas, we often use it for exposed roof rafters and purlins. It has an attractive red/brown colour, that if left exposed to the elements will slowly weather silver or it can be blackened by flame and waxed.

Alder

Alder is a fast-growing native tree found throughout the UK and Europe. Known for its hardiness, it thrives in a variety of soil types and plays a key role in preventing soil erosion by binding the earth together. The bark is dark, often marked with large fissures, and is home to lichen. Alder’s fruits provide food for birds, while its catkins offer an early source of nectar and pollen for bees. When felled, the pale wood of alder takes on a rich, deep orange hue. Additionally, alder stumps regenerate quickly through a process called coppicing, where new shoots grow from the base, ensuring the tree’s continued vitality and resilience.

How we use alder

Alder is our top choice for the internal paneling and benches of our saunas, thanks to its outstanding resistance to twisting and warping, even under the intense heat of sauna environments. Naturally water-repellent, alder thrives in humid and high-temperature conditions, ensuring long-lasting performance. To further enhance its durability and visual appeal, we frequently use thermo-treated alder. This specialised process deepens the wood’s colour to a rich, warm tone while significantly improving its stability.
